Johnny come lately

I recently discovered “The 4-hour work week” in the same way that the portuguese “discovered” South Africa. Alas. But, as they say, better late than pregnant. I am half way through the first chapter and already the wheels in my head are a-twirling.

“4. The Timing Is Never Right. I once asked my mom how she decided when to have her first child, little ol’ me. The answer was simple: “It was something we wanted, and we decided there was no point in putting it off. The timing is never right to have a baby.” And so it is. For all of the most important things, the timing always sucks. Waiting for a good time to quit your job? The stars will never align and the traffic lights of life will never all be green at the same time.”

I am gobsmacked. I already know where my passion lies. Podcasting is more than just a hobby for me. It doesn’t define me (not in the way my job would in years gone by), It is the means to an end. An outlet for creativity using the spoken (oft written) word.

Timothy Ferriss challenges everything I thought I knew about life and retirement planning. Simple truths: live now, worry later. Or not. You only have this moment, after all! So there I was, on the sound advice of my then 80-something year old grandmother (who was a housewife most of her life), I started saving for my retirement as soon as I started working.

Like my grandfather, I endeavoured to stick to one job for life (building up a nice little nest egg for my golden years). Things have changed at work. The environment has become nothing but toxic, soul destroying, drudgery. And I am enough. It is time to dare to do more than just dream. It is time to live.
