After building a 16-point lead against Kentucky in the third quarter of Saturday’s game, the Georgia Bulldogs held out long to ensure they would go home with another hard-fought SEC win.

No. 1 Georgia held off a late rally in Kentucky by making crucial stops on the Wildcats’ final two drives to secure a 16-6 win on the road. Points were hard to come by that night for the Bulldogs, who ultimately found three Jack Podlesny field goals and a Kenny McIntosh rushing touchdown to surpass Kentucky.

“I was really proud of our guys tonight with the resilience and composure and toughness they showed,” Kirby Smart said after the game. “We knew it was going to be that kind of game. We’ve been talking about this all week. We actually showed clips from last time we came up here in terms of the number of snaps played and the shrinking of the game, which I think was wise for Mark to keep the game tight and the number of possessions up reduce. Under these conditions you will play such games. Really proud of it as our boys had their backs to the wall as they struggled in what they do. Could certainly have played better in the red zone. We could have stopped some rides defensively where we would have given them some conversions and penalties and stuff. I give Kentucky a lot of credit for bouncing back and being a truly physical football team. We won the line of scrimmage tonight, which is what we had to do.

As a result of Saturday’s action, Georgia beat Kentucky for a 13th straight season and sealed an undefeated record in this season’s SEC game, only the 11th in program history. Now they will prepare for Georgia Tech.

“I don’t know much about them,” Kirby Smart said after the game. “Obviously we broke them a lot in the off-season. I have a lot of respect for Brent. I know Brent well, I’ve known him for a long time. I respect the rivalry. I’m looking forward to going and.” I look forward to honoring these seniors in class, a class that has a chance to be the most successful class that has ever had the chance to play in Georgia, and they’ve had a COVID year.
