Gray wins 200-yard butterfly, Sycamores takes third at Kansas Classic

TOPEKA, Kan. – Indiana State completed the Kansas Classic, finishing third overall in the team standings Marnie Gray completed the butterfly event to mark the final day at the Capitol Federal Natatorium.

The Sycamores finished the three-day event with 799 total points by dominating the MVC schools in the competition. ISU finished behind Iowa State (953) and Kansas (907) in the team score while leading Northern Iowa (432) and Arkansas Little Rock (264).

Gray clinched Indiana State’s third event win at the Kansas Classic on Sunday when the senior led the field in the 200-yard butterfly on Sunday afternoon with a time of 2:03.14. It was her second event win this weekend as the Toronto, Canada native claimed the 100-yard butterfly victory on Saturday night.

Andrea Putrimas added the ISU’s third win over the weekend as the senior led the field in Friday night’s 500-yard freestyle. Putrimas and Maddie Rutan (100-yard backstroke) also set new ISU records over the weekend to mark the weekend.

Sunday afternoon final
1650 Freestyle Finals

Esther Rydbeck North led five Sycamores to finish in the top 10 in the 1650 yard freestyle field when the junior hit the wall in 17:08.65. The time was the fifth fastest in ISU history and put her in fourth overall on Sunday afternoon. Andrea Putrimas (17:12.90, 5.), Molly Fogarty (17:17.19, 7th), Haley Halsall (17:26.88, 9th) and Rhiannon Wozny (17:32.37, 10.) were all in the top 10 of the field Rose Parsons (18:08.40, 16th) rounded out the group for the ISU.

200 Backstroke Finals
Maddie Rutan finished fourth overall in the 200-yard backstroke final, leading the Sycamores in the field. The junior posted a time of 1:59.62 to highlight her final event, while Olivia DiRuzza added a top-eight finish in 2:05.53. Carmen Alard Vegas (2:02.43, 11th) also finished among the goalscorers, while Kalli Agapios (2:02.19, 17th), Trista Bullock (2:06.05, 23rd) and Esther Rydbeck Norden (2:12.32, 24th) also ended up among the leaders. Tori Johns (2:07.79, 25th) completed the plane trees in Sunday’s final.

100 yard freestyle final
Alexa Szadorski nearly equaled the Indiana State record in the 100-yard freestyle event when the sophomore touched the wall in 50.89 and placed second overall in the field. The second year was 0.04 out Chloe Farros Record mark set at last year’s Kansas Classic (50.85) and Szadorski slashed her morning prelim time by nearly half a second.

Farro (51.40, 11th) and Peyton Heagy (51.73, 13th) both finished among the top scorers for ISU, while Raine Boles (52.21, 18th) and Carmina Armstrong (52.63, 22nd) also ended up in the top field. Jordan Gruce (53.11, 27th) completed the plane trees in the event final.

200 breaststroke final
Dorotea Bukvic finished, cut her provisional time in the 200-yard breaststroke final by nearly three full seconds as the sophomore finished second in the field in 2:16.80. Kaimi Matsumoto added a fifth result in the event finals in 2:19.38 while Makayla Surah (2:24.63 17th) and Kamila Nowak (2:30.52 21st) both finished the Sycamores in the event.

200 butterfly finals
Marnie Gray finished the butterfly event sweep at the Kansas Classic as the senior slid nearly a full second off her provisional time on her way to the 200-yard Butterfly event win. Gray’s time of 2:03.14 beat Winter Craig of Iowa State (2:03.26) to record the win, while Indiana State had four athletes in the top-8 of the field.

Katie Dougherty (2:05.69, 5th), Haley Halsall (2:06.71, 7th) and Alexandria Cotter (2:06.96, 8th) all finished among the field leaders for the day as the Sycamores put up a strong contingent in the event finale. Colleen O’Connor (2:07.85, 12.), Molly Fogarty (2:13.44 15th) and Rebecca Shaffer (2:13.62 16th) all finished in the top 16 of the field to mark the event.

400 Freestyle Relay Final

Indiana State’s top flight Chloe Farro, Kaimi MatsumotoPeyton Heagy and Alexa Szadorski posted the third fastest time in ISU history in the 400-yard freestyle relay when the Sycamores touched the wall in 3:25.32 for third overall. The group of Marnie Gray, Carmina ArmstrongRaine Boles and Kalli Agapios (3:31.15) finished ninth overall for a top 10 finish.

The Sycamores fielded the group of two final quartets Andrea Putrimas, Jordan Gruce, Carmen Alard Vegasand Rhiannon Wozny Finishing in 3:33.18 while the Trista BullockEsther Rydbeck North, Dorotea Bukvicand Alexandria Cotter The quartet finished in 3:34.32.

Maddie Rutan was the best Sycamore in the 200-yard backstroke heats when the junior hit the wall in 1:59.32 and finished second in the field. Olivia DiRuzza (2:01.88, 7th) and Carmen Alard Vegas (2:02.36, 9th) both added top 10 finishes in the prelims to highlight the ISU’s efforts. A total of seven plane trees advanced by Sunday afternoon Trista Bullock (2:05.94, 21st), Kalli Agapios (2:07.12, 23rd), Esther Rydbeck North (2:07.42, 24th) and Tori Johns (2:10.67, 30th) all qualified for the event finals.

100 freestyle preliminary rounds
Alexa Szadorski led six Sycamores advancing to Sunday afternoon’s finals when the runner-up hit the wall in 51.37 to finish sixth in the field. Chloe Farro finished just 0.01 off her teammate in ninth, while Peyton Heagy (51.84, 13th) added a top 15 finish in the morning session. Also includes progressing in the field Carmina Armstrong (52.66, 21st), Raine Boles (52.69, 22nd) and Jordan Gruce (53.00, 28th).

200 heats breaststroke
Dorotea Bukvic continues her strong season in the 200-yard breaststroke as the sophomore is third overall in the field after Sunday morning’s preliminary rounds. Bukvic’s time of 2:19.49 led five Sycamores to advance to the afternoon’s final Kaimi Matsumoto (2:21.27, 7.) and Elle Gilkerson (2:25.51, 15th) both added top 15 finishes. to join the trio Makayla Surah (2:28.72, 20th) and Kamila Nowak (2:30.50, 22nd).
