Partnering on Giving Tuesday supports global generosity

Bloomington – WFIU Public Radio, IU Credit Union and Beacon are teaming up to give back to the Bloomington community this Giving Tuesday, November 29th. Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement founded in 2012 to encourage people to do good.

It has since grown into a year-round global movement, inspiring hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity.

For every contribution WFIU receives on Giving Tuesday, IU Credit Union will provide a pair of socks to the Shalom Center, Beacon’s day shelter in Bloomington.

Rev. Forrest Gilmore

“The most requested item by homeless people when they first enter our shelter is a warm, dry pair of socks,” said Rev. Forrest Gilmore, Executive Director of Beacon. “Often when you lose your home, you lose everything else too. Lifting people up by helping them with the basics like food, shelter and clothing is the first step on the way back Home. This Giving Tuesday partnership with IU Credit Union and WFIU will help ensure that first step is gentle.”

WFIU station operations manager John Bailey says Giving Tuesday is a time to celebrate the good that all public service organizations, including public radio stations and organizations like Beacon, do in a day
suitable for everyday use.

John Bailey

“Thanks to the generosity of IU Credit Union, we can share the spotlight together. WFIU listeners will not only be able to strengthen the essential news and music they rely on, but also do a little more in support of Beacon, which offers so much to the most vulnerable in our community.” said Bailey.

The WFIU’s goal is to raise $25,000 on Giving Tuesday, which would be the equivalent of nearly 170 pairs of socks provided to Beacon by the IU Credit Union.

Karen Earley-Mullis

“IU Credit Union values serving our community in a way that has a positive and lasting impact,” said Karen Earley-Mullis, Marketing Manager, IU Credit Union. “We are proud to partner with WFIU and
Beacon to provide warm essentials to those in need in our community.”
