TOPEKA, Kan. – Maddie Rutan set an Indiana state record for the second straight year at the Kansas Classic while Marnie Gray completed the 100-yard butterfly sweep to highlight the Sycamores on day two at the Capitol Federal Natatorium.
The Sycamores are third overall in the teams’ standings through the first two days at Topeka, while Indiana State (532) lags behind Kansas (639) and Iowa State (630) through the first 12 events. Northern Iowa (314) and Little Rock (197) complete the top 5 in the team standings.
Rutan set the new ISU mark in the 100-yard backstroke when the junior touched the wall in 55.00 seconds on her way to third overall in the event. The Roseville, Calif. native has seven fastest times in ISU history, including last year’s record of 55.08.
Gray was the top overall finisher in the 100 fly after morning heats as the senior swept the field in 54.48. She finished Saturday night’s sweep with a time of 54.66, nearly three-tenths of a second ahead of her closest competitor to take the ISU’s second event win of the weekend.
Finals on Saturday night
200 Medley Relay
Indiana State started Saturday night with a great performance as the Sycamores’ top team in the 200-yard medley relay Carmen Alard Vegas, Kaimi Matsumoto, Marnie Grayand Alexa Szadorski posted the third fastest time in ISU history. The Sycamores touched the wall in 1:42.29 and finished third overall in the field on the night.
The ISU second team has also achieved an all-time top-20 performance Maddie Rutan, Elle GilkersonRaine Boles and Chloe Farro finished ninth in the field in 1:44.71. The Last Sycamore Group of Trista BullockPeyton Heagy, Rebecca Shaffer and Carmina Armstrong touched in 1:46.01 and finished 13th overall.
400 IN THE FINALS
Alexandria Cotter clocked a full three seconds off her provisional time on her way to a new personal best in the 400 IM field. The sophomore touched the wall in 4:23.20 on her way to third overall in Saturday night’s field. Her mark was the fifth fastest time in Sycamore history.
The Sycamores added four more in the field’s top-10 Alexa Szadorski (4:26.62, 6th), Katie Dougherty (4:27.80, 7th), Molly Fogarty (4:28.80, 8.) and Dorotea Bukvic (4:26.38, 10th) all ended up among the field leaders. ISU added two more to the scoring section Colleen O’Connor (4:32.83, 14th) and Esther Rydbeck North (4:32.88, 15th) also finished in the top 16 of the field. Haley Halsall (4:37.07, 21st) and Makayla Surah (4:37.76, 23rd) rounded out the group in the field.
100 butterfly finals
Marnie Gray completed the 100-yard butterfly sweep on Saturday as the senior again led the field to secure the second ISU win of the weekend. The Toronto native claimed the title after beating Autumn Looney of Kansas (54.95) with a 54.66 in the event.
Raine Boles (56.59, 7th) was also fielded in the top-10 for the Sycamores during Kaimi Matsumoto (56.19, 11th) also ended up in the ISU ranking. Rebecca Shaffer (58.97, 26th) and Sarah Moreau (1:00.53, 30th) also entered the field.
200 Freestyle final
Andrea Putrimas again led the Sycamores in the 200-yard freestyle final as the senior set another personal best in the evening competition. She touched the wall in 1:51.43 and finished fourth in the field with the ninth fastest time in Indiana state history.
Overall, the ISU finished in the top 16 with six athletes: Peyton Heagy (1:51.95, 9th), Kalli Agapios (1:52.59, 10th), Rhiannon Wozny (1:53.37, 12.), Chloe Farro (1:54,86, 15.) and Jordan Gruce (1:57.20, 16th) all on the leaderboard. Carmina Armstrong (1:55.01, 20.) and Rose Parsons (1:59.32, 27th) also started in the event final.
100 Breaststroke Finals
Kaimi Matsumoto kept the Sycamores on the podium on Saturday night as the senior hit the fourth fastest mark in ISU history with a time of 1:03.60 and finished second in the field. Her time, which placed her fourth overall in the ISU record book, improved a full half second on her pre-lap time in the morning session.
Alexa Szadorski She almost finished fourth with her teammate in the top three with a personal best of 1:03.92. Elle Gilkerson added a top 10 finish in the field in 1:05.30 and finished 10th overall. Dorotea Bukvic With a time of 1:05.19 (17th), Kamila Nowak (1:09.31, 24th) just missed the goal Makayla Surah (1:07.72, 25th) also took to the field on Saturday evening.
100 Backstroke Finals
Maddie Rutan couldn’t defend her 100-yard backstroke title from last year’s Kansas Classic, so the junior had to settle for breaking the ISU event record instead. Rutan touched the wall in 55.00 to take eight hundredths off her 2021 mark and give her the seven fastest times in ISU history. Her time earned her third overall in the field to bring another athlete to the podium for the ISU.
Carmen Alard Vegas (56.40, 8th) added a top 10 finish to the field while Olivia DiRuzza (57.57, 19th) and Trista Bullock (57.71, 20th) were in the top-20 overall. Tori Johns rounded out the group in 59.32 (29th).
800 Freestyle Season Finale
The Sycamores finished the final event of the day with a third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay as a quartet of Andrea Putrimas, Alexandria CotterPeyton Heagy and Alexa Szadorski touched the wall in 7:33.29.
The ISU’s second group in the field finished seventh overall Rhiannon WoznyEsther Rydbeck North, Jordan Gruceand Kalli Agapios finished in 7:39.46 while the last group of Haley Halsall, Molly Fogarty, Colleen O’Connorand Rose Parsons finished 12th overall in 7:55.52.

400 IM preliminary rounds
Alexandria Cotter set a new personal best in the 400-yard IM heats when the student hit the wall in 4:26.44 and finished third overall in the field. Alexa Szadorski (4:27.00, 4th), Molly Fogarty (4:29.01, 6th) and Katie Dougherty (4:30.17, 8th) were all in the top-10 for the Sycamores, as nine athletes finished in the top-24 of the field.
Esther Rydbeck North (4:30.92, 13th), Colleen O’Connor (4:31.69, 15.), Dorotea Bukvic (4:31.90, 16th) and Haley Halsall (4:36.16, 20th) all finished in the top-20 of the field Makayla Surah rounded out the group in 4:40.31 (24th).
100 fly heats
Marnie Gray was just short of her record pace when she set the second-fastest 100-yard butterfly time in program history. The senior touched the wall in 54.48 on her way to victory in the prelims and first place overall. Raine Boles (56.14, 8th) and Kaimi Matsumoto (56.30, 11th) also ended up in the top 12 of the field Sarah Moreau (58.06, 25th) and Rebecca Shaffer (58.41, 26th) also advanced to the final to round out the group.
200 free pre-runs
Andrea Putrimas was the leader among the Sycamores in the 200-yard freestyle heats. The senior touched the wall in 1:52.93 on her way to seventh overall in the field. Kalli Agapios (1:53.28, 9th), Peyton Heagy (1:53.47, 10th) and Jordan Gruce (1:53.53, 12th) all finished in the top 12 of the field while Rhiannon Wozny (1:54.03, 14.) and Chloe Farro (1:54.14, 15.) also advanced. Carmina Armstrong (1:57.99, 27.) and Rose Parsons (1:58.66, 29th) completed the group of plane trees who will compete in tonight’s finals.
100 breaststroke preliminary rounds
Kaimi Matsumoto and Alexa Szadorski went the 100-yard breaststroke in the prelims Saturday morning 2-3 en route to the top five Sycamores who finished in the top 24. Matsumoto touched the wall in 1:04.18 to finish second in the preliminary field, while Szadorski was on his way to third in 1:04.27. Elle Gilkerson was also in the top 10 with a time of 1:05.08 to mark the event. Dorotea Bukvic (1:07.58, 17th), Kamila Nowak (1:08.58, 21st) and Makayla Surah (1:09.24, 25th) also made it into the final on Saturday.
100 backstroke preliminary
