What to expect and how to see ECU at the Gulf Coast Showcase

East Carolina heads to the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida, preparing for its first away competition of the year. The Pirates are guaranteed three games in three days, beginning with a matchup at 1:30 p.m. ET Monday afternoon against Indiana State.

The winner of the game plays against the winner of Toledo/Kansas City on Tuesday. If ECU wins the opening round, it will play Tuesday at 5:00pm ET. A loss means the Pirates play the loser of the Toledo/KC game at 11am on Tuesday. Toledo receives top 25 votes and is considered the best team in the tournament field. The Pirates are guaranteed a third game on Wednesday at a time to be determined against the other side of the bracket.

The entire tournament can be viewed on FloHoops, a subscription streaming service available through FloSports. The cost of signing up is $29.99 per month. It’s worth noting that a monthly subscription to the service also gives ECU fans the chance to watch a fourth game – on December 6th at UNC Wilmington – before the subscription is renewed.

ECU was scheduled to compete in the Gulf Coast Showcase and actually face Indiana State in 2020-21, but the competition was canceled due to COVID-19. The Pirates then canceled their trip to Florida that season entirely.

East Carolina starts 3-0 under new head coach Michael Black, although the pirates did not take it easy on themselves. They have come through deficits of 16, 19 and 17 in their first three games, beating Mercer 77-75, Presbyterian 77-57 and Hampton 82-73. This is ECU’s first away game under Schwartz.

“If we could play all 31 games with the Minges Maniacs and be there, that would be great,” Schwartz said. “But yeah, I think you create your own energy and take to the streets. We had two secret scrimmages where you go out into the street, nobody’s in the building, I think our guys felt that before.

“I don’t know what the audience will be like in Florida. But we must generate our own energy. You really create your own energy by playing right from the start. We didn’t do that. We have allowed the outcome to be the reason our energy gets going. We fixed that.”

According to OddsShark, Indiana State is an 8.5-point favorite to come into play. The Sycamores are also 3-0 so far this season under sophomore head coach Josh Schertz, who coached for several years at the Lincoln Memorial, a Division II program in Tennessee. Indiana State went 11-20 last season, including a 4-14 mark in conference play and a 3-14 combination mark away. But this year, Schertz has added several transfers. There are nine on the list, to be precise, including three graduate students and three other seniors.

The Sycamores are led in the standings by 6-5, 211-pound guard and DePaul transfer Courvoisier McCauley. He scored 30 goals last time out and averages 22.3 points per game. Indiana State has averaged 80, 83, and 101 points in double-digit wins over Green Bay, Ball State, and North Dakota State.

“During his time at Indiana State, he already established this type of electrodelect,” Schwartz said. “They have five guys who can all shoot basketball. They spread the ground, they play fast. They played really well defensively this season. Obviously they haven’t lost yet, they’re unbeaten and they’ve had three really impressive performances.”
