Hamba Kahle, Uncle George. In this Lockdown Log, we mourn the passing of Advocate George Bizos SC. He passed away today at the age of 92. A giant has fallen. This is my tribute.
I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Uncle George Bizos. Popularly known as “Mandela’s lawyer”, Bizos’ death signals the end of an era. I have interviewed many people in my career. Judges, doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, unionists, stateless. But no other offered to share their lunch with me. It was the yummiest, most flagrant fish on a sea of vegetables.
Most wholesome lunch I’ve ever had! And that’s how I choose to remember Uncle George. Spending time with him, listening to his story… Well, it transformed me. For once, I had an exciting story to tell. About coming here as an immigrant after the war. Having to learn a new language. And be seperated from his mother.
And just look at what he went on to become?! A marvellous human being. Who, together with Mandela, turned apart-hate on its head. A man who lived to see a new beginning. What a rich life! So full of hope! Intrigue! And joy! I salute you, Uncle George. May Your Soul Rest In Peace.
