Athena Cinema announces Christmas film series

The holidays are here and that means it’s time for Athena Cinema to announce the lineup of classic holiday films for the 10th Annual Holiday Film Series.

Beginning Friday, December 2, the series is offering free entry to holiday films in exchange for food or cash donations to the local pantry.

From December 2-22, Ohio University’s College of Fine Arts Athena Cinema will partner with Arts for OHIO, the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, the Athens Uptown Business Association and Athens Food Pantries to bring back the traditional Christmas film series.

Athena Cinema will change lineup this year by opening the event on the same night as Athens Tree Lighting.

  • The first event will be on Friday evening, December 2nd at 7pm with Edward Scissorhands
  • The second event will screen “Elf” on Saturday 3 December at 1pm and 3pm.
  • On Saturday, December 10th, the theater will be showing A Christmas Story at 3:00pm and there will also be an ugly sweater contest before the film.
  • The Grinch (2018) plays Saturday, December 17 at 3 p.m.
  • The closing event will take place on Thursday 22nd December and will be a screening of ‘White Christmas’ at 7pm.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the 10th year of the Holiday Series. There’s something magical about watching holiday movies together on Court Street and the experience is one of our favorite annual traditions,” said Athena Cinema Director Alexandra Kamody.

To help needy families in the area, the price of admission to these performances is a non-perishable food item or monetary donation per ticket. Over the past 10 years, this series of events has raised nearly £7,000 in non-perishable food donations and around $4,300 in cash donations for the Athens Food Pantry.

Tickets are available one week before each scheduled performance. This year, tickets will also be available online for monetary donations. Donations can be dropped off during regular Athena Lobby opening hours. Tickets will be issued at the time of donation. The Athena Cinema lobby is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 4pm to 8pm, Thursday and Friday from 4pm to 10pm, Saturday from 2pm to 10pm and Sunday from 2pm to 8pm

The purpose of the Holiday Series initiative is to give back to the larger Athens community and families in need during the season. The theater also hopes to provide an affordable uptown entertainment option and increase traffic to area businesses. All students, faculty, staff and local residents are invited to support the initiative, take advantage of local shopping/eating and enjoy a fun holiday event with family and friends.
