Irish ice hockey team Notre Dame Fighting took to the streets last night to open an away series with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Notre Dame was able to secure a second-half lead before Ohio State equalized. The Buckeyes rallied late to score two goals and add a third with an empty net to win the game.
Match Summary (Notre Dame 2 – Ohio State 5)
Ohio State secured an early lead, jumping out by a goal four minutes into the game. With less than a minute left in the period, Notre Dame tied the game. Chase Blackmun grabbed a rebound and carried it behind the net to the right faceoff circle. He ran a pass across the ice to the opposite circle where Trevor Janicke fired the shot once into open netting before Jakub Dobes could recover.
At the start of the second period, it was Notre Dame’s turn. The puck worked its way around the boards where Fin Williams grabbed it in the corner. He made a hard angle shot from almost the goal line that managed to squeeze past Dobes to score his first career goal.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Ohio State managed to score an own goal just three minutes later.
The third period was not kind to Notre Dame. The first half was uneventful, but Ohio State took the lead again after 12 minutes. They added another goal two minutes later to take a two-goal lead and sealed the win with an empty net goal.
