ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Michigan men’s basketball team is looking to recover from a 25-point loss when they host Ohio at the Crisler Center Sunday night.
Michigan lost 87-62 to Arizona State in last Thursday’s Legends Classic Championship Game. They return to their home court with a 3-1 record, including wins on neutral court against Eastern Michigan and Pittsburgh.
The Wolverines are led by center Hunter Dickinson, who is averaging 19.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Jett Howard has quickly established himself as the No. 2 leading scorer in his first four collegiate games as he added 14.8 points and shoots 40.7% from deep.
After a 3-0 start to the season, UM suffered their worst loss of the Juwan Howard era against Arizona State. Cold shooting and poor defense marked a night of very little action for the Wolverines, who replaced four starters from last year’s team.
The Bobcats are 1-2 with road losses to Belmont and Detroit Mercy. Their only win came on November 12 at home against Cleveland State.
Three Ohio players have averaged more than 10 points, led by guards DeVon Baker and Miles Brown. Baker is in his third program after stints at UNC Asheville and Tulane; He is one of nine freshmen on the Ohio roster.
Another “new” face is Dwight Wilson III, who returned to the pitch this season after missing out last season with a knee injury. In 2020-21, he led the team in rebounds and averaged 14.4 points per game. It’s in its sixth season, including the first three on James Madison.
Due in part to their roster turnover, Ohio was ranked fifth on the MAC in a preseason poll.
The two programs have not met since March 2012, when the Bobcats upset the Wolverines in the first round of the NCAA tournament. (Ohio would make the Sweet 16 this year.) UM leads the all-time series 3-1.
